Calgarians can meet firefighters and learn about lithium-ion battery safety at two mall events during Fire Prevention Week, which runs October 4–10.
The Calgary Fire Department’s October 2 announcement lists opportunities to speak with firefighters and enjoy a free virtual reality experience at these locations:
• CF Chinook Centre: Wednesday, October 7, from 3 to 7 p.m.
• Sunridge Mall: Saturday, October 10, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The events accompany the department’s campaign encouraging safer charging and battery disposal.
As of its October 2 release, the department reported 20 lithium-ion battery fires in Calgary in 2026, mostly involving e-scooters, e-bikes and battery packs. It said the city was on track for a record year.
The department’s guide, “What to do with your lithium-ion battery,” explains when to call emergency services and how to dispose of damaged batteries.
